The tale begins in the early 2000s when a California couple discovered an unusual Bicentennial Quarter in their possession. 

The quarter appeared to be missing its clad layer—a manufacturing error where the copper-nickel clad layer was absent, leaving only the copper core exposed. 

The absence of the clad layer turned out to be a stroke of incredible luck for the couple.
