Yogurts can now claim, however loosely, to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

With this ruling, the federal agency has approved the first-ever health claim for yogurt.  

Although qualified health claims are backed by scientific data, they do not satisfy the stricter "significant scientific agreement" criterion needed to be approved.   

These claims must accurately convey to consumers the degree of scientific evidence supporting the claim

Eating yogurt on a regular basis—at least two cups, or three servings—may lower the risk of the disease  

Yogurt is made from milk that has been fermented with Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus bacteria, also known as probiotics.
